Coming from Fayetteville NC to AT. Nearest trail head to start a 3 day hike?.

My son and I are both experienced hikers and are looking for the nearest trail head on the AT coming from Fayettevile NC. We will probably hike around 30 to 40 miles but am haviing trouble finiding the info. Any help would be appreciated

Looking at a map, the closest AT trail heads from Fayetteville, NC will be in the stretch around Roanoke, VA. But driving distance/time may mean that areas along the TN stretch between Roan Mtn. and Damascus, VA are faster to get to.
